Kajjala purita lochana dhaare
Kantha sushobhita mukuta haare
Veena pustaka ranjita haste
bhagawati bharati devi namaste
Whose eyes are rimmed with kohl,
Neck adorned with pearl strings,
Whose hands hold the veena and book,
We bow to Goddess Saraswati.
The first blossoms of spring welcome Saraswati - the Goddess of wisdom.
Dressed in pristine white, she comes riding the mythical Hamsa or swan -
a symbol of focus and intellectual discrimination for it can supposedly separate milk from water.
As the Goddess blesses one and all even the proud peacock closes its brilliant feathered tail in humility and enlightenment.
